The MMRCA program of the Indian Air Force (IAF) gained the reputation of being the ‘mother of all procurements’ due to its high cost, estimated at about $10 billion in 2007. However, the purchase of only 36 Rafale jets, instead of the intended 126 aircraft, a decade later proved to have limited value. As a result, successive IAF chiefs have raised concerns about the declining squadron strength, which currently stands at a meager 32. According to the current IAF chief, it would take another 10 years to increase the squadron strength to 35. Unfortunately, the Indian Army and Navy also face significant deficiencies, as highlighted by the media. With India being in election mode and strategies to attract voters (particularly leading up to the general election in 2024), the defense allocation in the Budget for 2024-25, which is currently being planned, might suffer. This could potentially impact India’s deterrence posture, as defense preparedness is of utmost importance.
