In September, the Indian Air Force (IAF) marked a significant milestone in its history with the formal induction of the first of the 56 C-295 medium-lift tactical transport aircraft. The initial squadron of C-295s will be stationed in Vadodara. Notably, while the Airbus facility in Seville, Spain will assemble the first 16 aircraft, the remaining 40 will be manufactured in Vadodara through a joint venture between Tata and Airbus. This marks the first instance of a private consortium in India manufacturing a military aircraft. Each aircraft will feature an indigenous electronic warfare system developed by Bharat Electronics Ltd and Bharat Dynamics Ltd, showcasing a harmonious fusion of Western technology and Indian expertise. With its exceptional capability to operate from unprepared landing grounds, the IAF anticipates that the C-295 will enhance its operational capabilities in forward areas near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. Undoubtedly, the acquisition of the C-295s, valued at Rs 22,000 crore, exemplifies the IAF’s commitment to procuring some of the world’s most advanced platforms. Presently, the IAF boasts a formidable arsenal, including Rafale fighters, Chinook and Apache helicopters, S400 air defense systems, state-of-the-art missiles integrated with fighter jets, and an array of cutting-edge radars, solidifying its position as one of the world’s most formidable air forces.
