In a historic milestone for India’s defense capabilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media on Monday to hail the groundbreaking achievement of DRDO scientists. The first flight test of the Agni-5 missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology marks a triumph for Mission Divyastra.

“Cheers to our brilliant DRDO scientists for steering the indigenous Agni-5 missile through its maiden flight with MIRV technology,” exclaimed Prime Minister Modi in his online message, shared on the bustling platform X. With a striking range of 5000 km, Agni-5 proudly stands as India’s premier contender in the Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) category.

MIRV technology, an innovation in ballistic missile payload design, entails multiple warheads capable of independent targeting—a crucial asset in modern warfare strategies. While commonly associated with intercontinental ballistic missiles, MIRV systems offer a formidable edge on the battlefield.

The illustrious league of nations utilizing MIRV missiles includes America, Britain, France, China, and Russia, with Pakistan joining their ranks following a successful test in 2017, as reported by the esteemed Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation based in Washington.

Distinguished by its advanced navigation, guidance systems, warhead, and engine, the Agni-5 epitomizes the pinnacle of the Agni series. As it gracefully arches into space, the missile’s trajectory culminates in a swift descent towards its target, propelled by the relentless force of gravity.

Complementing the Agni-5’s prowess, India’s arsenal boasts an array of formidable missiles, ranging from the Agni-1 with a 700km reach to the Agni-4 surpassing 3,500km.
