Embarking on an exhilarating journey towards the stars, Skyroot Aerospace, a pioneering space company in India, recently took a giant leap by conducting a groundbreaking test of Stage-2 for its Vikram-1 rocket on March 27, 2024.
This pivotal test, held at the prestigious Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s test site in Sriharikota, signifies a monumental moment in India’s space exploration history, as it heralds the emergence of the first private company in the country gearing up to conquer the cosmos. Skyroot had previously etched its name in the annals of space achievement with the successful launch of the Vikram-S rocket back in November 2022.
Lasting a mere 85 heart-pounding seconds, the test showcased the raw power of the rocket, generating an awe-inspiring 186 kilonewtons (kN) of force at sea level, with expectations soaring to a staggering 235kN once it breaches the vacuum of space. The Kalam-250 rocket, boasting cutting-edge materials and sophisticated systems for thermal protection, along with a precision nozzle and impeccable control mechanisms, promises precise trajectory adjustments, ensuring a smooth voyage into the unknown. Behind the scenes, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre played a pivotal role in ensuring safety protocols, while Solar Industries in Nagpur fueled the rocket’s ambition with its supply of rocket fuel.
But this test wasn’t just another trial; it was a culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Prior to this momentous occasion, Skyroot had already triumphed with the successful testing of another vital component, the Kalam-100, back in June 2021. Stage-2, the linchpin in the rocket’s journey from the Earth’s embrace to the boundless expanse of space, has now been conquered.
Pawan Chandana, one of the visionary founders of Skyroot Aerospace, couldn’t contain his excitement as he exclaimed, “This is a monumental leap for India’s space prowess, showcasing the ingenuity of the private sector in crafting mighty rockets. The results of this test have surpassed our wildest dreams, bringing us one step closer to the historic launch of the Vikram-1 rocket.”
Echoing his sentiments, Naga Bharath Daka, another luminary at Skyroot, emphasized the significance of the test, stating, “This test validated the impeccable precision of our rocket’s controls during ignition, a crucial milestone in our odyssey to the stars. With our unwavering determination and the collaborative efforts of our stellar team, we are steadfastly focused on launching the Vikram-1 rocket in 2024, propelling India into a new era of space exploration.”
